far | reach — adventure journal
Layout | Photography | Copywriting
THE BRIEF
Produce a magazine that maintains a consistent style and layout using developed brand guidelines.
THE SOLUTION
Bespoke content from a personal adventure that was undertaken solely for this project.
THE APPROACH
In National Geographic-style, I set off on a dusty 575-mile off-road motorcycle trek from Oregon to Canada to capture all the magazine content by journaling and using three cameras, including a drone. With the raw content in hand, I created the entire magazine from scratch using Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom and InDesign. The result is a 120-page magazine packed with glossy, full-page imagery nested within the complete, written journey of an off-road motorcycle trip through Washington State. The layout is readable, digestible and compels readers to turn the page.
For every word and image I have inside the 120 page first edition of far | reach I have 200 others that didn’t make the cut. Image selection and copyediting were crucial in making a fluid piece of design that kept readers attention. The latin term “Horror vacui” translates to “fear of empty space” was definitely something I had to confront with this project. Not every square inch of the page need to be covered, and white space can be leveraged to focus readers attention,  strengthen the hierarchy and support the overall message.
