THE BRIEF
Craft a delightful 12-month bloom calendar for Swansons Nursery to aid gardeners in finding new and exciting plants to ensure a full year of flowers.
THE SOLUTION
A meticulous visual distillation of each species led to clean illustrations reminiscent of scientific journals. Stacked color blocks in gradiating tones provided depth to otherwise flat imagery.
THE APPROACH
When walking around a nursery, discovering new plants for the garden is one of my favorite activities. I went directly to the source for my research, Swansons Nursery. As expected, I was happily helped with discovering a long list (nearly 45 species) of flowers that bloom throughout the year here in Seattle. I narrowed down the list to 12 species that included a mix of evergreen, shade-tolerant plants and visually stunning varieties. Taking cues from scientific illustration and the work of Mark Conlan, I used plain, dark backgrounds that allowed the illustrations to shine. Subtle color shifts emulated light and provided a sense of depth.
